What is coca leaf?

Coca leaf comes from Erythroxylum coca, a shrub native to the Andes of South America. People in Peru, Bolivia and Colombia have chewed the leaf and brewed it as tea for centuries, and mate de coca is still served across the region today.

What's in the leaf

In 1975, a Harvard Botanical Museum analysis led by USDA botanist James Duke measured the nutrients in dried coca leaf and found calcium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin A and riboflavin (vitamin B2), at higher levels than the average of the 50 Latin American plant foods it was compared with. Later analyses have reported lower figures, and the 1975 authors themselves cautioned against drawing conclusions about the leaf's food value.
